Prince Harry Supports Elizabeth Hurley in Tabloid Privacy Case
London’s High Court became the center of attention as Prince Harry appeared in support of Elizabeth Hurley during an emotional hearing tied to alleged tabloid spying. The case has drawn wide interest because it challenges long-standing media practices and highlights the personal cost of intrusive reporting on public figures.
Prince Harry and Elizabeth Hurley are among seven claimants suing Associated Newspapers, the publisher of the Daily Mail and Mail on Sunday. The group also includes Sir Elton John. Their legal team claims the tabloids used unlawful methods over nearly two decades to gather private information.
Attorney David Sherborne described the actions as clear, repeated, and systematic.
Elizabeth Describes Deep Emotional Harm
Elizabeth Hurley, 60, struggled to hold back tears as she addressed the court. She said tabloids tapped her landline phones and placed hidden microphones near her home. She described the experience as a brutal invasion that caused lasting distress.
Hurley paused several times while recalling articles she said caused serious emotional harm. The stories appeared between 2002 and 2011. She explained that the details felt too precise to be the result of guesswork. “I believe it’s because people were listening to me speak,” she told the court.
When asked why she did not file complaints earlier, Hurley said many articles contained accurate details. She said that accuracy made the situation even more disturbing.

Alleged Phone Tapping and Hidden Surveillance
In a written witness statement, Hurley accused the publisher of tapping her home phones and recording live conversations. She also claimed hidden microphones were placed on her windowsill. She said tabloids stole her medical information while she was pregnant.
Hurley called the alleged actions shocking and extreme. She told the court that learning about the phone tapping left her devastated. “I felt crushed,” she said. The discovery made her question whether friends or nearby individuals were involved.
Despite her visible distress, Hurley declined a break during testimony. Her voice cracked as she described the period as traumatic. She explained that she stayed silent for years to protect her son, Damian Hurley.
Prince Harry’s Presence in Court
Prince Harry attended the hearing one day after giving his own testimony. He was not scheduled to speak that day. Observers viewed his presence as a clear sign of support.
Royal experts noted that Harry had originally been expected to testify that day. His decision to attend still carried weight. Commentators said it showed the case involves more than one individual. It also reinforced the idea that the lawsuit challenges broader media behavior.
Outside the courtroom, Harry appeared alongside other claimants. The moment underscored the shared nature of the legal fight.
Associated Newspapers Rejects All Claims
Associated Newspapers strongly denied the allegations. The publisher called the claims preposterous. Company lawyers argued that roughly 50 articles cited in the lawsuit relied on lawful reporting.
Lead barrister Anthony White said the information came from legitimate sources. He stated that acquaintances volunteered details about their famous friends. The defense argued that no illegal surveillance occurred.
The publisher also claimed that quotes from Hurley’s friends were approved. Lawyers added that Hurley’s own comments were mild and did not reveal private information.
Prince Harry’s Testimony and Family Strain
Hurley’s appearance followed Prince Harry’s two-and-a-half-hour testimony the day before. In his witness statement, Harry named Prince William and Catherine, Princess of Wales. He described them as part of his trusted circle between 1996 and 2014.
Harry said certain tabloid stories contained details that could only come from unlawfully obtained information. He argued those details circulated within trusted relationships.
Royal commentators said the testimony highlighted a clear divide between the brothers. They pointed to different ways William and Harry have dealt with the press. Some believe that the difference contributed to their long-standing rift.
Strong Reactions From Royal Experts

YouTube | Worldwide Speakers Group | Hilary Fordwich slammed Harry’s decision to name Prince William in court as a betrayal.
Not all experts supported Harry’s approach. British royal expert Hilary Fordwich criticized his decision to name Prince William in court. She called it a betrayal of trust.
Fordwich cited Harry’s own words, where he said he and William trusted each other with sensitive family information. She argued that referencing William undermined that trust. She also claimed the judge repeatedly reminded Harry that allegations do not equal proof.
Fordwich added that the case risks pulling the monarchy into celebrity-style disputes. She said other royals remain focused on duty and service.
Meghan’s Role in the Legal Dispute
Harry also grew emotional while discussing Meghan Markle. He told the court that tabloid coverage made her life “an absolute misery.” He said the idea that he is not entitled to privacy is “disgusting.”
Harry has described the lawsuit as another deeply painful chapter for his family. The case revisits the 2019 decision to publish Meghan’s private letter to her father, Thomas Markle. Despite objections, The Mail on Sunday went ahead with releasing the letter.
Royal commentators have pointed out that Harry and Meghan say they sought legal support at the time. According to them, the palace chose not to intervene.
The case continues to raise serious questions about privacy and press conduct. Elizabeth Hurley’s testimony brought attention to the emotional impact of alleged surveillance, while Harry’s involvement reflects a broader challenge to tabloid culture.
The ruling could shape how media organizations handle private material in the future. Whatever the outcome, the trial has already pushed public conversation toward accountability, personal boundaries, and the real people behind high-profile stories.
